"This work responds to an environment that squeezes, pushes, and diminishes possibilities. It is not a sick body, but a body produced by scarcity. Economic, emotional, and material precarity translates into a tense anatomy. I seek to suggest that even in precarity, the body retains a minimum strength that allows it to remain standing. For me, painting like this is refusing to beautify poverty, but also to erase it." - Fichu
